eBay Vintage Barneys New York Military Style Boots Size 8.5 (39 European) Intro/Background Designed and sold exclusively by Barneys New York in the mid-1990s, these boots cannot be found anywhere online. Purchased in the mid 1990s at their Beverly Hills location, the military-style boots are a testament to the luxury goods for which Barneys New York is famous. Made in Italy of the softest leather with an indestructible sole, these boots are both sophisticated, high-end and (bonus!) extremely comfortable. They are the kind of boot that can be dressed up or down, making them a staple to any wardrobe. Barneys New York Founded in 1923 by Barney Pressman, Barney’s New York (they dropped the apostrophe in 1981) initially opened in New York City as a men’s discount clothing store on 7th Avenue and West 17th St. As the story goes, Pressman raised the initial $500 for the lease by pawning his wife’s engagement ring. The store bore only men’s suits and a sign which read “No Bunk, No Junk, No Imitations.” Pressman purchased showroom samples, overstocks and merchandise sold at closeout auctions and bankruptcy sales, enabling him to sell the items at discount prices. In addition, he sweetened the pot by offering free alterations and free parking to attract customers. Barneys became known as “the first of its kind” in the retail business, bringing small fame to Barney Pressman, which landed him on TV and Radio — free advertising. According to documented history of Barneys New York, “Pressman claimed to be the first Manhattan retailer to use radio and television, beginning with ‘Calling All Men to Barney’s’ radio spots in the 1930s. He sponsored radio programs featuring Irish tenors and bands playing jigs to advertise Irish woolens. Women encased in barrels gave away matchbooks with the store name and address. He also chartered a boat to take 2,000 of his customers from Manhattan to Coney Island.” Pressman is quoted as saying, “The best value you can offer a customer is personal attention to every detail, and they will return again and again. Ultimately, the customer cares the most about how he or she is treated.” Pressman died in July 1996. Over the years, Barneys began to expand its inventory. In the 1960s, Barney’s son, Fred, made the transition from a discount store to a luxury retailer. Over the many decades that followed, Barneys became the go-to luxury store for celebrities and glitterati. With high-end brands such as Giorgio Amani, Prada, and Christian Dior, it quickly became a mecca for any upscale patron with the financial means to afford its price tags. If was purchased at Barneys, it came with a pedigree of high standards. On August 6, 2019, Barneys New York filed for bankruptcy for a second time. On October 25, 2019, Authentic Brands Group announced it had bought the company for $271.4 million. All stores closed with the future of the business to be announced. On January 15, 2021, Saks Fifth Avenue unveiled a 54,000-square-foot space on the fifth floor of its flagship in New York, titled “Barneys at Saks”. The collaboration is aimed at continuing Barneys New York tradition of unearthing and promoting emerging designers. On January 25, 2021, Saks Fifth Avenue unveiled the first standalone “Barneys at Saks” store at a 14,000-square-foot location in Greenwich, Connecticut. In the end, a small piece of Barney Pressman remains to this day, a testament to the lofty position he earned in luxury retail history. The Boots: Reaching to mid-calf, these boots are both cute and sexy. With a decorative buckle at the ankle and another at the top of the boot (which allows for a slightly-adjustable closure), these show-stoppers say both Classic Couture and “Ride or Die.” On a personal note, my wife said she loved the soft “clinking noise” the buckles made when she walked. She said it made her “feel like a bad ass…” (If you knew my wife you would understand). The interior of the boot is a beautiful black suede, with “Made in Italy Barneys New York” stamped in the brown inner leather bottom sole. The boots have a two-inch wood and rubber heel which, as you can see by the photographs, barely appears to have been worn. You can actually see the size sticker adhered to the bottom of the boot. (This lack of wear is a testament to the vast number of boots my wife owns. She always grabs a different pair…) I can without qualm say these boots are like new. There are no tears, fraying, damage or even wear on the soles. It’s possible the buckles were once shinier (they are a metallic grey), but it’s impossible to even know that without a photo of what they looked like just out of the box. These would be an asset to any wardrobe. They’ve been sitting unworn for so long (25 years?), they deserve to be worn and admired, as they are quite beautiful.
