Undine by De La Motte Fouque. Adapted from the German by W. L. Courtney. Illustrated and signed by Arthur Rackham, #797 out of only 1,000. Published in 1909 by William Heinemann in London. Bound in original full vellum with tooled gilt lettering and decoration. Thick, high-quality paper. Folio, 12” x 9”. Extraordinarily Illustrated with tipped in full-color plates and wonderful chapter head and tail pieces. OVERALL CONDITION: NEAR MINT – VG++ to NF ***Copies in similar high-grade collectible condition sell for as high as $3,000 at rare book sites and at high end auctions.*** Undine is a fairytale novella (Erzählung) by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldbrand in order to gain a soul. Published in 1811, it is an early German fairytale, and has been translated into dozens of languages across the world. Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte, Baron Fouqué (12 February 1777 – 23 January 1843) was a German writer of the Romantic style. Between 1810 and 1815, Fouqué's popularity was at its height; the many romances and novels, plays and epics which he produced with extraordinary rapidity, appealed greatly to the mood of the hour. Undine appeared around 1811, the only work by which Fouqué's memory still lives today. “Were I asked, what is a fairytale? I should reply, Read Undine: that is a fairytale … of all fairytales I know, I think Undine the most beautiful.” (George MacDonald, The Fantastic Imagination) CONDITION: In Very Good++ to Near Fine antiquarian condition. Square spine with firm hinges and joints and tight pages. Some bowing to the boards and a little darkening, particularly the spine (typical with antique vellum). Interior is quite clean with no writing, ex-libris marks or stamps. Plates are in excellent shape. Only a few spots of foxing and some toning from pages adjacent to brown plate mounting paper (as is the case for every copy I’ve seen). One of the original yellow ties is included (detached – usually these are missing altogether). All in all, one of the highest grade collectible copies of this Arthur Rackham signed limited edition I see on the market and in its original fine vellum binding!
