1986 ‘Contemporary Art’ Chinese ink with watercolor abstract painting. Signed and dated upper right “’86 Hwang Chur Hwu” and marked with artist’s stamp. Authenticity guaranteed. This painting comes with it’s original mat. Painting on paper (laid on paper backer) is laid down aka mounted to (pasted or glued) to wood panel board. Painted image size = 13 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches. Paper size = approx. 14 3/8 x 14 1/2 inches. Overall size with mat and wood panel = 19 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches. Unframed. I found this painting and another one by a different Chinese artist (see my other eBay listing) at a small, uncataloged ‘country auction’ here in the Philadelphia area. Offered here is a great example of “New Ink Movement” Chinese painting. I don’t know a lot about the artist because his bio would be in a book (actually, a big exhibition catalog) that I don’t have: “Contemporary Chinese Painting”, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University Press, 1986. See the pictures I’ve posted, from the internet, from the Chinese University Bulletin, Number Three, 1986, including info on the Exhibition and Symposium on Contemporary Chinese Painting. In just one paragraph, they tell us who the Top 50 Contemporary Chinese painters were. They mention the catalog (titled “Contemporary Chinese Painting”) and that it contains biographical info on the artists. Hwang Chur-Hwu was from Taiwan, which is the Republic Of China (ROC). He went to Hong Kong and exhibited in the “Contemporary Chinese Painting” show. The exhibition was a big, groundbreaking, landmark event. There was a symposium, painting demonstrations / sessions, etc., also taking place in conjunction with the show. At the symposium, Hwang Chur-Hwu prepared and presented the paper, “The New Generation Of Ink Painting In Taiwan”. I don’t know if the painting offered here was actually in the 1986 exhibition or not, but I do know that Hwang Chur-Hwu exhibited in that 1986 exhibition. This is what they wrote in the Chinese University Bulletin, Number Three, 1986: “A historic event in the contemporary Chinese art scene, the exhibition and the symposium provided an unprecedented opportunity for major artists to display their works under one roof and to exchange their views on Chinese painting. The response from the painters and scholars was even more enthusiastic, since some of them were friends who have been apart for two or three decades. The activities have focused the public’s attention on Chinese painting and stimulated greater interest. All the artists and scholars who took part agreed with Mr. Huang Zhou who, at the Vice Chancellor’s welcoming dinner, said: This is a gathering that has no precedent. It may be the first time, but we believe it will not be the last”. Liu Kuo-sung (aka Liu Guosong) is considered the master of modern Chinese ink painting. He was born in mainland China, moved to Taiwan and then was also active in Hong Kong, teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He’d been the leading figure in the “Fifth Moon Group”. Note that Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan are the three areas, according to the Artnet reports, that make up “Greater China”. The painting offered here by Hwang Chur-Hwu reminds me of Liu Kuo-sung’s paintings (which can sell for as much as $2 million + at auction). Perhaps Hwang Chur-Hwu was a pupil of Liu Kuo-sung. Liu Guosong / Liu Kuo-sung was in the 1986 exhibition but listed as “Liu Kuosung” with no hyphen. Other artists in the show had more than one name, such as Lee Chi-mao (aka Li Yuntai) and Chu Ko (aka Yuan Te-Hsing). Between the variable spellings, artists taking different names, and probably language translation factors, it can be difficult to research Chinese artists. It took a long time for contemporary Chinese art to become the major collecting area that it is today on the world stage. While sites like the one we’re on here can be great for collectibles like comic books (an X-Men comic recently sold here for $40K), it’s a completely different story for ‘fine art’. With artworks such as desirable paintings, we have to look at the actual ‘art market’ and what’s happening there (be it at Sotheby’s auctions, international fairs like Art Basel, etc.), to know market facts, real sales results, understand collecting trends, and so on. During the Cultural Revolution, art collecting activities and art trade were outlawed in mainland China. The two largest art auction houses in China, China Guardian Auctions and Beijing Poly International Auction, founded in 1993 and 2005 respectively, have annual sales that exceed nearly all of their Western peers. In Taiwan, the market was small until around 2007 when major sales of Taiwanese artists paintings started to happen in Hong Kong. And, even in Hong Kong, the ball didn’t really get rolling for contemporary art until the early 2000’s when Sotheby’s Hong Kong created a new stand-alone category for Chinese contemporary art. Then, Art Basel powered into Hong Kong, buying up the initial Art HK fair in 2011 and transforming the territory as the Asian destination for contemporary art. According to the Art Basel site: “The New Ink Movement in Hong Kong, which revolutionized traditional ink art by integrating modern concepts and techniques, has had a profound and lasting impact on Hong Kong’s art scene. Spanning the 1960s to the 1980s, the movement was closely linked to the drastic political and sociocultural changes that occurred in China in the 20th century. As a British colony, periods of severed or restricted ties with the Chinese mainland saw Hong Kong shift its cultural moorings towards Western Europe and North America. Within this context, artists charted a unique trajectory that distinguished itself from traditional Chinese ink painting while still acknowledging its roots, emphasizing individual expression over political, social, and historical dogmas”.
