This luxurious 38-foot yacht was ordered by Hemingway after he received a $3300 advance for his short stories during a stopover in New York on his way back to Key West from an African safari. Wheeler Shipyard was renowned for its exceptional handcrafted wooden boats and had previously produced a pleasure yacht called the Playmate, which proved to be highly successful until 1939. Hemingway made several modifications to the 38-foot version he ordered, including the addition of a live fish well and a wooden roller across the transom to facilitate hauling in fish. He also requested extra-large fuel tanks for extended periods at sea. The boat featured two engines – a 75hp motor for traveling and a 40hp motor for trolling. Hemingway also requested a flying bridge. The photo above shows Hemingway atop that flying bridge as Pilar sets sail from Havana harbor. The total cost for the custom yacht amounted to $7500 and it was brought to Key West, where it was christened Pilar (not only the name of the heroine in “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” but also Pauline, Hemingway’s then-wife’s nickname). Through the assistance of Charles Thompson, a friend of Hemingway and owner of a hardware store in Key West, he gained permission to dock the yacht at the Navy Yard, located just a few blocks from Hemingway’s home on Whitehead Street. Following Hemingway’s divorce from Pauline and subsequent marriage to Martha Gelhorn (whom he had met at Sloppy Joe’s), they relocated to Cuba in 1940 and purchased Finca Vigia (Lookout Farm), a home overlooking Havana. Pilar was docked in Cojimar, a small fishing village east of Havana, which inspired Hemingway’s novella “The Old Man and the Sea.” Unfortunately, when he left Cuba in 1960 with his fourth wife, Mary, he was unaware that the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 would prevent his return and separate him from his beloved Pilar. After Hemingway’s death in July of that year, his widow gifted the yacht to Gregorio Fuentes, who had served as its captain. Fuentes also served as the basis for the character Santiago in “The Old Man and the Sea” and passed away in 2002 at the age of 104. Today, Finca Vigia has become a museum where Pilar is displayed atop the tennis courts, surrounded by a walkway for visitors to admire its interior.
