ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Very Rare Vintage c.1930’s Religious/Inspirational Halftone Lithograph of the Famous Biblical Painting titled, “The Last Supper”, after the c.1492-1498 painting by the world famous listed High Renaissance painter ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ (Italian, 1452-1519). Print Info: “Leonardo’s most famous painting of the 1490’s is The Last Supper, commissioned for the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan. It represents the last meal shared by Jesus with his disciples before his capture and death, and shows the moment when Jesus has just said “one of you will betray me,” and the consternation that this statement caused. The writer Matteo Bandello observed Leonardo at work and wrote that some days he would paint from dawn till dusk without stopping to eat and then not paint for three or four days at a time. This was beyond the comprehension of the prior of the convent, who hounded him until Leonardo asked Ludovico to intervene. Vasari describes how Leonardo, troubled over his ability to adequately depict the faces of Christ and the traitor Judas, told the Duke that he might be obliged to use the prior as his model. When finished, the painting was acclaimed as a masterpiece of design and characterization, but it deteriorated rapidly, so that within a hundred years it was described by one viewer as “completely ruined.” Leonardo, instead of using the reliable technique of fresco, had used tempera over a ground that was mainly gesso, resulting in a surface subject to mould and to flaking. Despite this, the painting remains one of the most reproduced works of art; countless copies have been made in various mediums.” (Source: Wikipedia) There is no publisher info printed on the piece, but may have possibly been published by Künzli Frères Zürich, as they had published numerous antique & vintage prints of religious-themed images and people. The inventory number along with the title appears printed lower left in the image corner, ‘2225-The Last Supper’ and the copyright symbol, ‘©’, appears printed very tiny lower right in the image corner. The Print itself is on a nice medium-weight cream-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The Image size is 15-15/16” x 19-15/16” (16” x 20”). The Litho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade—beautiful rich color & tones. This Litho has been tucked away in one of our archive drawers amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time and is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No tears! No real or significant damage on this gorgeous piece with the small exceptions of: Extremely minimal (less than a handful) of very small & very slight crescent creases scattered here & there on the sheet, as well as very slight creasing in the upper right corner and small dog-ear bends in the other three corners. Extremely minimal (only a few) very tiny & faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which aren’t even noticeable and aren’t even worth mentioning; Negligible toning of the paper stock from age which isn’t even noticeable or worth mentioning either amidst the cream color of the paper stock itself. This vintage halftone litho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to matburn or lightfade and would make a wonderful addition to any da Vinci or religious/inspirational art collection—simply beautiful!
