eBay The Prints of Albrecht Durer Adam and Eve, 1504 Fine Art Reproduction Full Size Reproduction: 10 x 7.7 inches This reproduction is a new, individually printed and proofed, superior quality, giclee* process, fine art print. It is printed on 100% cotton rag acid-free, heavyweight fine art paper with a luxurious textured watercolor paper finish and archival pigment inks to ensure permanence. Created for collectors, it IS NOT A POSTER or mass produced print on low quality, inexpensive paper. Albrecht Durer(1471-1528) was the leading artist of the Northern Renaissance and the greatest printmaker in the history of western art. A prolific draftsman, he elevated the aesthetic quality of printmaking and put it on equal terms with the drawings and paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Artists across Europe admired and copied Dürer’s innovative and powerful prints. His copperplate engravings of Knight, Death, and the Devil, Adam and Eve, Melencolia I and the woodcut of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are still universally acclaimed today. Technically, Dürer’s prints are exemplary for their detail and precision. The son of a goldsmith, Dürer was trained as a metalworker at a young age. He applied the same meticulous, exacting methods required in this delicate work to his woodcuts and engravings. He traveled to Italy in 1494, and returned again in 1505-6. Contact with Italian painters resonated deeply in his art. Dürer was also a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci. He was intrigued by the Italian master’s studies of the human figure, and after 1506 applied and adapted Leonardo’s proportions to his own figures, as is evident in his drawings. During 1513 and 1514 Dürer created the greatest of his copperplate engravings: the Knight and Melencolia I – both of approximately the same size. Dürer became increasingly drawn to the idea that the perfect human form corresponded to a system of proportion and measurements. His fascination with ideal form is manifest in Adam and Eve. The first man and woman are shown in nearly symmetrical idealized poses: each with the weight on one leg, the other leg bent, and each with one arm angled slightly upward from the elbow and somewhat away from the body. The figure of Adam is reminiscent of the Hellenistic Apollo Belvedere, excavated in Italy late in the fifteenth century. Dürer was a complete master of engraving: human and snake skin, animal fur, and tree bark and leaves are rendered distinctively. The branch Adam holds is of the mountain ash, the Tree of Life, while the fig, of which Eve has broken off a branch, is the forbidden Tree of Knowledge. Four of the animals represent the medieval idea of the four temperaments: the cat is choleric, the rabbit sanguine, the ox phlegmatic, and the elk melancholic. Before the Fall, these humors were held in check, controlled by the innocence of man; once Adam and Eve ate from the apple of knowledge, all four were activated, all innocence lost. Durer captures the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden before the fall from grace in their full beauty and innocence. Durer used the classical poses of the gods Apollo and Diana for his Adam and Eve. The intricate detail of this engraving – the background, trees, animals, tonal values and features of the stylized hair on both subjects illustrates the breathtaking achievement of Durer’s art.
