A sitethat offered a portage route between the River and LakePonchartrain, a site Bienville named New Orleans afterLouis Philippe, Due D’Orleans, then Regent of France.The first few years of the city were not promising.Father Charlevoix, one of the first visitors to the strugglingsettlement, wrote in 1722 that it consisted of a hundredbarracks, a large wooden storehouse, a few tents and twoor three houses, which he observed, “would be no orna-ment to a village of France”.About this same time. Bienville finally succeeded in hav-ing the capital moved from Biloxi to New Orleans and thereal history of the city began.Adrien De Pauger, who was assistant to Le Blond De LaTour, Royal Engineer, drew up plans of the city accordingto the French model. He marked out a square aroundwhich the important public buildings of the new commu-nity were to be located and from which the city was todevelop. The Square was located on the banks of the riverand the new buildings, including St. Louis Church, thepredecessor of the present cathedral, placed back of it.Thus was the beginning of “The Crescent City”, in anarea which the city has long since outgrown. The area ofthe original city is now known as the French Quarter, orVieux Carre.However, New Orleans came under Spanish ride from1762 to 1803, and this accounts for the strong Spanish in-fluence to be seen in Vieux Carre architecture.In 1803, it was restored to France, and in December,1803, Napoleon sold the vast Louisiana territory to theAmerican Republic for $15,000,000. Not long after., theBritish decided to make a stab at control of the MississippiValley and selected New Orleans as the key city in the at-tack. In 1814 a British fleet appeared off Barataria Island,then the headquarters of the Lafitte Brothers. All attemptsto bribe these men failed. The Brothers decided to teamwith the defending Americans. After some hesitation, onthe part of the officials, their offer was accepted and thepirates fought side by side with Andrew Jackson’s Ken-tucky riflemen and Louisiana militiamen to defeat theBritish in the Battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1815.History buffs will enjoy a visit to the site of the battle,Chalmette National Historical Park. A section of AndrewJackson’s mud rampart has been restored and historicalmarkers tell the story. The Park is a 20 minute ride downthe river from the Vieux Carre. The Battle of New Orleansdecided once and for all who would control the MississippiValley.
