I need to clear some space on my shelves (and this will leave a pretty big hole on my shelf), so I need to part with some of my collection. Following the releases of other large patrol craft (Schnellboot, PT Boat and smaller specialty craft), Italeri has released this gargantuan Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) from the Royal Navy. This kit is absolutely loaded with everything you could possibly need to build a breathtaking replica. There is a dazzling full hull and main deck, all the controls in the pilot house and well done torpedo tubes with a couple of fish that can go inside or sit in racks for better viewing. There is an extensive sheet of PE parts, along with clear acetate for portholes and windows and a thorough 24-page photographic book of instructions and reference material. I found a handful of listings for this kit on eBay (mostly from overseas) but as a Top Rated Plus US Seller, I have this in stock and can reliably ship this kit to you very quickly. Here is what I have found online about this awesome kit: The Italeri site shows the contents of the kit with 18 photos of the parts, decals, painting guide, figures and an assembled, finished kit, along with the following write up of the subject: The box contains: 7 Figures, Photo-etched Fret, Clear Sheet, Screws and Ropes In March 1942, a British amphibious attack was undertaken by Royal Navy and Commandos against the large dry dock at Saint Nazaire, in German occupied France. “Chariot” was the codename of the combined operation. The French harbor was in fact an important logistic point for the German Kriegsmarine in the Atlantic. The raid was conducted by some destroyers and by a motor launches flotilla that provide the transport duties of British Commandos. The operation was successful done and the dry dock was damaged and unusable until the end of the war. A key role was assigned to the MTB 74. It had been specifically modified by Royal Navy shipyards to house torpedo tubes on its foredeck and to adopt specific engine silencers to reduce the noise. MTB 74 duty was to hit the anti-submarine nets and then to launch its torpedoes to block the lock gate. The MTB achieved its targets, but on the way back, it was hit and sank. Scalemates.com confirms that this is a 2020 release based on the 2014 MTB 74 St. Nazaire Raid kit (ITL #5619) which sprang from the brand-new MTB 77 tooling (ITL #5610) from 2011. It also has a link to the 24-page instruction set from the #5619 kit and links to reviews that might be useful in your build. Amateurs and professionals alike have been consistent in their positive acclaim for this amazing kit. Here is a sampling of what they have been saying: Michael Benolkin of cybermodeler.com did a First Look review that shows close-ups of all the parts and pieces, including the PE set. He confirms that this kit (ITL #5624) is the St. Nazaire Raid kit (ITL #5619) with the addition of a crew of seven figures. He singles out the detail of the Main Deck as outstanding, as well as the intricate torpedo tubes. In his summary, he said: “This is another really nice kit and should build up as nicely as PT-596 though this kit is a little less complicated. The use of photo-etch is straightforward and doesn’t require very many parts to be either folded or shaped.” Martin Quinn did an exhaustive In-Box Review on the modelwarships.com site that has dozens of photos of the kit components. This is definitely the place to go to see what you get in the box. Each sprue, PE fret, decal sheet and page in the instruction book has multiple pictures. He was quite impressed with the kit, saying: “As mentioned, this is a BIG model. It should give anyone many hours of enjoyment building it, with the added bonus of a crew. I think it would look particularly fine if it was crewed, nicely weathered and placed in a diorama.” Mike Kellner did a two-part Build Review on the ipmsusa3.org site. The first part brought us the history of the Vosper 74 and the St. Nazaire Raid, as well as the cabin and interior. The second part completed his build and painting. He ran into a few problems, but didn’t blame the kit, saying: “I would think anybody that has done a model or two should be able to handle this one. Most of the problems I had, I believe, were self-induced.” Clayton Ockerby did a stunning Build Review on the themodellingnews.com site. He shows you his excellent build in a step-by-step fashion so you can benefit from his experience and avoid any mistakes. The only thing he didn’t like was the detail of the figures, saying in his Conclusion: “Don’t let the figures scare you off though, there is a lot to like about this model. In fact, there is a lot to like about this 1/35 range of torpedo boats Italeri produce. With a few basic construction skills and a couple of simple painting techniques you can produce a kit that will give you an impressive display on the table that commands attention.” This kit is in an enormous, sturdy box about 28.5” x 13.5” x 6”. As you can see from the pictures, the package is pristine and still has the original two large tape disks, so I consider it factory sealed and absolutely gift-ready. This item contains one complete injection molded plastic model kit with PE parts, rope and wire, screws, die-cut clear acetate sheet, a small set of decals and a 24-page reference manual along with a bonus set of seven crew figures.
