I need to clear some space on my shelves, so I have to part with some of my collection. Back in 2005, Tamiya released some of their most popular kits with the addition of high-quality ABER PE sets and metal barrels, in essence cutting out the middleman for the aftermarket parts. I have been a big fan of these kits, such as the King Tiger (#25144) and the T-55A (#25145) and I probably still have these listed. This kit (#25143) is one that I just found and is the StuG III Ausf.B that Tamiya created in 1995 (#35281) with the addition of three frets of high-quality ABER photo etched metal and a rifled aluminum barrel. Here are some of the details about this mind-blowing kit that I found from around the web: The tamiya.com site has a listing under the Limited Edition section of their On-Line Catalog. They show four photos that include an assembled and painted model, as well as the three frets of ABER PE (although no photo of the aluminum barrel). They provide the following information about the StuG III, the ABER upgrades and the kit features: About the Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.B The StuG III first saw action in the early stages of WWII, providing mobile infantry fire support as the German army rapidly broke through enemy defenses. Its fixed superstructure gave it a low profile and it was armed with the same 75mm StuK 37 L/24 gun as the early Pz.Kpfw.IV tanks. It was also well-protected by 50mm frontal and 30mm side armor. The Ausf.B in particular was built from June 1940 to May 1941, with 250 examples produced, and they served during the German army’s Balkan Campaign in April 1941 as well as in Operation Barbarossa two months later. Not only did they provide support to infantry, they also helped counter the formidable T-34 and KV-1 tanks of the Russian army. Photo-Etched Parts for Precision Details This model comes with photo-etched parts made by acclaimed Polish aftermarket parts manufacturer Aber®. These parts include fine details such as equipment fasteners, smoke discharger, air intake grilles, antenna case stays, and convoy lights. There are also parts to add detail to the figure’s headphones. · Included aluminum gun barrel for the short 75mm gun features accurate barrel rifling · Suspension is movable to allow modellers to match the model with their desired diorama situation · Detailed interior includes gun breech, radio, crew seats, and ammunition rack · Four types of marking options also included · Comes with a commander figure Andy’s Hobby Headquarters produced a very nice Build Video on YouTube that takes you through the major construction and painting steps, with a musical background. In about 15 minutes, you get a good look at how this kit goes together and can pick up some tips for making your kit look professionally built. Terry Ashley did another of his wonderful First Look Reviews on the perthmilitarymodelling.com site that is broken down by major subassemblies (Lower Hull, Tracks, Upper Hull, Superstructure, Gun and Decals). He shows all the parts, the decals and the rifled aluminum barrel. He points out that spending time on the interior is not wasted on this kit, saying: “The superstructure just slips over the gun onto the lower hull and can be left unglued if you want to remove this at any stage to show off the interior and the fit is good enough not to worry about gluing if you didn’t want to.” Ray Mehlberger did an In Box Review on the indy-amps.weebly.com site that goes through the history of the StuG III, the kit in general and then each sprue and each kit component. He seemed very pleased with the quality of the kit, pointing out some unique touches, such as: “There is a short turned-steel barrel. Tamiya says it has been treated with an anti-rust preparation and should be thoroughly washed before you use it. It is also threaded inside with the rifling. Kudos to Tamiya for that.” Scalemates.com has a listing that confirms this is a 2005 release of a 1995 new mold. These is a link to the complete instruction set and many links to reviews, books, walk-arounds and galleries of completed kits. This kit is in a sturdy, decorated box about 14” x 8” x 2.5”. As you can see from the pictures, the package is immaculate and still in the original shrink wrap, so it is factory sealed and absolutely gift-ready. This item contains one complete injection molded plastic model kit with about 280 grey plastic parts, one piece vinyl tracks, a set of decals and a complete set of ABER photo etched parts and a metal barrel to detail this beast.
